Signed Books, Merchandise and er… Stuff

Hi chaps,

Okay, I’ve been thinking. Periodically I receive queries about signed books, cover art/world map prints and so on. I have to keep turning these down, because at the moment I don’t have a convenient (or even particularly feasible) way of fulfilling these requests. I’d really like to be able to do it though.

The best idea I can come up with is to open a shop (at, say, etsy) specially to offer book-themed stuff. The signed paperback option will be in there, as well as print copies of the Draykon world map (and the upcoming Draykon “film” poster, which is in production right now. It will, of course, be a beautiful thing). I’d also like to look into the possibility of getting some themed book plates put together; I can sign and dedicate these and send, and you can put them inside your books (as a cheaper, easier way of getting stuff signed). There are tons of other options, of course – bookmarks, t-shirts, whatever.

There are some problems on the horizon, the biggest one being that I can’t offer signed paperbacks cheaply. It’s the postage that kills me. Author copies are cheaper for me than they are in the shops, but they have to be printed in the US at the moment, so all the advantage of that is wiped out by the cost of getting them to me. Also, postage in the Netherlands isn’t cheap either. I may be able to work something out here, but maybe not.

Course, all this will take quite a lot of time to research and put together. Before I do that, I want to gauge your interest. What do you think? Do you like the ideas I’ve put forward so far? Are there any other things you’d be interested in seeing in my hypothetical shop? Let me know in the comments.
